OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE DEV BARDWAJ WRITERS GATHERING IN INDIA

Mister Dev,

I write to you as to dear friend and an admirer of India. May you be blessed with peace and health from the god you believe in.

If you want to inquire about me, I assure you that my soul is in peace and my pshysical health is fine because of your prayers for me, my esteemed friend Dev.

Four of us from Serbia can never forget your hospitality in India nor your wisdom. By your advice and program we spent in India more time than we planned. India is yours as well as our country, and you are the brother of all Roma. Everything we received from the language or from hands of your people we felt that it was from your heart.

No where on the planet during my journeys and I went around 60% of the globe I was I received with so much open-heartedness, love and sincerity as among your people.

Every member of the Roma community bears deep inside of him, consciously or unconsciously a piece of India either in his intuition or his customs or in his senitivity to beauty.

We, Roma are one big part of India. The destiny separated us from India even before the Christ’s birth and directed us across Europe and the front Asia on the Balkans. But though physicly separated from our cradle we never spiritually left her. The Sanscrit’s words, customs, legends, proverbs, spells, the fantastic songs about people that turns into snakes and other animals - all of that is saved in the conscious of Roma more than in the conscience of other indo-european nations. The word Roma has a Sanscrit origin. Significant is the fact that no nation in Europe ( maybe in the whole world ) has „r“ as a vowel except the India and the Roma nation.

But I’m not going to talk about the Roma and their miseries in Europe but about India, our cradle.

India is full of mystery, social and philosopic treasure. The mystery of a mankind in religious sense no where in the world has so practical importance as in India. In India people believe in three realities and according to them they direct their life. These three realities according to their faith are: Carma, Darma and Reincaration. Carma is the destiny, Darma is the duty and Reincaration is rebirth in the new body human or unhuman.

In social view the Indian society is divided into four caste: Brahman, Kshatry, Bayshy and Shudre. This social organisation lasts for thousands of years without any change and without any wish to change something. This organization couldn’t be dwelt if people do not constantly think of will become of them after their death and if they do not think of Carma and Darma. Carma, Darma and Reincaration are closed triangle which destine, explains and tranquiles everybody. The Brahman in this life can turn into Shudra, and Shudra can become a Brahman, an imperor can become a beggar and the beggar can become the imperor. By this is established justice and reconciliation with your state and status within a man’s life.

Europe, the atheistic Europe do not think of the death or what will came after death, she rebells and demands a fullfillation of justice in short time from birth to the death of a man or the whole generation. Her metar is not the metar but millimetar. And so measuring everithing by millimeters she rebells, yells, shouts, turns and tumbles and falls from one burrow to another.

In Europe people seeks thruth in science and justice in equallity. These are two potions that have drunked all white humankind. When I tested these potions I have found more bitterness than sweetness. But to speak to Europeans against the science and equallity is equally purposeless as to speak a drunken against the wine and the liquor.

In philosopical view, India is more wealthy than all other nations in whole. Everything that people as people can think about without the God’s assistance is contrived by Indian wise men. The belly of India is so fertile that has born everything that can be born, from the higher to the low. Only Brahman could reveal something new that people in India could not reach by their mind. And Brahma has really descovered something new to his people, He discovered the wealth to all people on the planet.

No one from the Europen people is not so invited to lend to India a hand of broterhood and friendship as the Roma people. Without any interest nor political, nor economy and without any visible material interest we tinight say hello to India, our the closest relative on the Asia continent. In front of her honourable sons that honoured us by giving us the opportunity to see India, we wish to Her every bless from the God’s hand, first to Her than to us. We, the Roma, as a small number of India’s children, want to handle down to India the flag of the eternal fight for freedom and truth of the God if it happpens that we fall down on the crossroad of this terrible time and we will pray to Brahman to bless our mother by blood and language.

These are flames not words, my brother Dev. You read this and give to other to read. Our sin is that we looked in so-called the big not the small nations of the world. But Byshnu often speaks through the small not trough the big. I’ll remind you that to our great philosoper Sankar the god Shiva developed in the beggar’s face. We should’t despise the small to reach the high. Read this to our mother India and make an obeisance to Her to the ground as to the goddess in my name, I beg you.

After visiting our cradle that is the Sacred Land we, here on the Balkans, can breathe easier. But about that I’ll write soon. May Byshnu give you a lot of days and a good health.

In the end I wish to represent you in the shortest form verses from my new poem:

INDIA- OUR HEART AND SOUL

India, old but dear land of ours,
The land dear, the land of the wealth,
From your tree and we are the branch,
And we are the children from Hindustan.
The Roma you do not know, but we well know you,
We think of you, to you we sing.
From Hymalayas to Hindukush
With you dwells our heart and soul.

In Belgrade,
